Course Information
The NVQ allows students the opportunity to gain academic and practical skills. It is a practical based qualification which suits those learners who like to learn by doing. It requires 100% commitment to work based learning and a flexible approach to study. Typically, you will learn by helping within the PE department, a fitness facility, organising coaching sessions and helping with equipment. A reflective portfolio is kept documenting all knowledge needed and evidence for this course.
Example units include:
- Health & safety
- Equality & diversity
- Setting up equipment
- Coaching a session.
Typically, students also resit GCSE English and/or maths alongside this qualification
Course assessment
You will be assessed through a portfolio-based folder, containing all the core knowledge you need to deliver sessions, including evidence of taking part in practical and class-based activities. You need to demonstrate an interest in working with children, adults and participants with disabilities, working towards developing their skills and confidence within sport sessions. You will be based in college however you will be expected to spend time in the community undertaking work experience organising and running sport sessions. You will need a flexible approach to studying as you may be required to assist on sessions during evenings or weekends.
Course progression
Studying for an NVQ is ideal if you wish to gain employment and work experience within designing, coaching and evaluating sports sessions. Level 2 NVQ is an essential qualification if you wish to work within the coaching industry.
Course entry
3 GCSE Grades 3 or D grade
Or an appropriate Level 1 Qualification and maths & English Language Grade 3 or functional Skills equivalent.
