BTEC NQF Level 3 Foundation Diploma Sport

Course duration

The Level 3 BTEC sport programme allows you to achieve first-class qualifications through classroom and vocational learning, whilst building your independence and gaining valuable practical experience in the sport and leisure industry. The Diploma is the equivalent of three A Levels. Embedded within the course is football coaching and playing for you to enhance your practical skills and experience.

This is studied over 2 years with an option to leave after year one with an extended certificate (equivalent to 1.5 A Levels) upon successful completion. However, most students progress to year 2 of study.

Course Information

Students will complete a programme including 7 core and optional units each year. A variety of sport subjects are studied to gain a general overview of the world of sport. They may include topics such as:

Anatomy & Physiology Sport Business
Fitness Training Sport Development
Fitness Testing Organising Events
Sport Coaching Skill Acquisition
Leadership Exercise, Health & Lifestyle
Practical Sport Research Methods

 

Course assessment

All units are assessed with an overall grade of Pass, Merit or distinction. Students are expected to complete the learning hours and work for each unit.  2 units are externally assessed via formal national examinations taken in the Spring and/or summer terms and 5 units are internally assessed through coursework and external verification. You may be assessed in the following ways; 

  • Written assignments and reports
  • Examinations
  • Presentations
  • Practical assessment and the delivery of coaching sessions.

Course progression

Students who study this course typically progress to university, gain scholarships in America or progress to apprenticeships. Students have progressed to study a variety of courses at university to include Teaching, Paramedic Studies, Sport Science, Coaching and Therapy & Public Service courses. Alternatively, students may find employment in the sports/recreation/leisure industry e.g., sports coaching, health and fitness, Public Service.

Course entry

4 x GCSE Grades 4/C and above including maths and English Language
Or
An appropriate Level 2 Qualification within sport and maths & English Language grade 4/C or above.
